Back Pain

What causes back pain?
There are many factors involved in chronic neck and back pain but they broadly fall into two categories: mechanical (posture, spinal dysfunction, joint and muscle health, leg length inequality, hypomobility) and habitual (sitting for long periods, computer and phone use, lifestyle, work, exercise, sleep).
What is the best therapy for back pain?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends osteopathy and spinal manipulation for the treatment of lower back pain and sciatica.
What are the best stretches for lower back pain?

Sciatica

Osteopathy can effectively treat sciatica by addressing musculoskeletal imbalances that contribute to nerve compression or irritation, particularly in the neck and lower back. Osteopathic treatment involves manual techniques such as soft tissue manipulation and joint mobilisation to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve, improve mobility, and reduce inflammation. Research supports its effectiveness - a significant number of randomised controlled trials have found that patients with sciatica who received osteopathic manipulative treatment experienced significant reductions in pain and improvements in function compared to control groups.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines for the management of lower back pain and sciatica, osteopathic treatment should be considered as part of a treatment package that includes exercise and psychological support.

Headaches & Migraines

Osteopathy can help treat certain types of headaches (tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches) by addressing musculoskeletal issues in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Osteopathy uses manual techniques such as spinal manipulation and mobilisation to relieve muscle tension, improve posture, and restore mobility in areas that may be contributing to headache pain. By improving blood flow and reducing nerve irritation, osteopathic treatment can help decrease the frequency and intensity of headaches.

Research supports the use of osteopathy for managing headaches, and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) also acknowledges osteopathic treatment as a potential component in the treatment of tension headaches and migraines.

Posture

Good posture is essential for maintaining a healthy musculoskeletal system and is a key focus in osteopathic care. Poor posture can place unnecessary strain on the spine, muscles, and joints, leading to pain, reduced mobility, and long-term structural imbalances. Osteopaths assess and address postural habits that may be contributing to discomfort or dysfunction, using manual techniques and tailored advice to help restore balance and alignment. By improving posture, patients often experience reduced pain, better movement, and enhanced overall wellbeing. Supporting healthy posture is a proactive way to prevent injury and maintain long-term physical health.
